How to permanently delete your TikTok account

Deleting TikTok isn’t instant — there’s a built-in 30-day grace period before anything actually disappears for good, which is worth knowing upfront so you’re not confused when your “deleted” account still shows up if you log back in a week later.

Deactivate vs. delete — these are not the same thing

TikTok gives you two genuinely different options, and it’s worth picking the right one on purpose:

  • Deactivate — your profile and videos disappear from public view, but nothing is deleted. Logging back in at any point brings everything back exactly as it was. Good if you want a break, not a goodbye.
  • Delete — starts that same 30-day countdown, but the intent is permanent removal. If you don’t log back in and reactivate during those 30 days, the account and its data are erased for good once the window closes.

Functionally, the first 30 days look identical either way — the real difference is what happens (or doesn’t) once that window ends.

Before you delete: download your data

If you want a copy of your videos, comments, and activity history before it’s gone, do this first: Profile → Menu → Settings and Privacy → Account → Download Your Data → Request Data. This can take a little while to generate, so it’s worth starting before you begin the deletion process itself.

How to delete your account, step by step

  • Open TikTok and tap your Profile.
  • Tap the menu icon (☰) in the top corner.
  • Go to Settings and Privacy → Account.
  • Tap “Deactivate or delete account.”
  • Select “Delete account” (not Deactivate).
  • You’ll be asked for a reason — this is optional, and you can tap “Skip” if you’d rather not say.
  • Follow the on-screen confirmation steps. TikTok may send a verification code to your phone or email to confirm it’s really you.
  • Confirm the deletion.

What actually gets deleted after 30 days

Once the grace period ends without reactivation, TikTok permanently removes your videos, comments, likes, saved posts, your follower and following lists, and any coin/purchase history tied to the account.

What might not fully disappear

A few things are outside your account’s direct control: messages you sent may still be visible in the recipient’s inbox even after your account is gone, and Duets or Stitches other people made using your content can remain up, just no longer credited to your account.

Changed your mind? Reactivating within 30 days

Just log back in using the same email, phone number, or linked login method you used before, and tap “Reactivate” when prompted. Everything — videos, followers, settings — comes back exactly as it was.

Can’t log in to delete your account?

If you’re locked out entirely, email support@tiktok.com with your username, date of birth, and the phone number or email linked to the account. TikTok may ask for additional verification before processing the request without you being able to log in yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Does my username become available for someone else to use after deletion?
Yes, generally — once the account is permanently deleted after the 30-day window, the username is freed up and can be claimed by another user.

Will people I follow or who follow me be notified when I delete my account?
No, there’s no notification sent to your followers or the accounts you followed — your profile simply stops appearing and eventually disappears from their view.

Is there any way to skip the 30-day waiting period and delete immediately?
No — the 30-day window is a fixed part of TikTok’s deletion process for everyone, designed specifically to prevent accidental, permanent deletions.
